Painted in tempera and gold on wood, in the lower part of this type of composition open tombs used to appear to free souls.

The blessed usually rise clockwise to the right of Christ.  To his left the damned are sent to Hell.  In this painting, Satan devours and excretes sinners, who suffer specific tortures based on their sins.
